Scooby-Doo Inspired Mystery Machine Hits the Market Again! Uncover the Secrets of the 1961 Ford Thames 800-E

Step into a real-life Scooby-Doo adventure with the 1961 Ford Thames 800-E! Reminiscent of the iconic Mystery Machine, this customized van captures the imagination. While the Thames 800-E shares similarities with the early Ford Econoline vans, it never made its way to the U.S. However, this particular van from 1961 has undergone a unique transformation, featuring a mighty 454 cubic inch Chevy V8 engine. Although it’s the second time we’ve encountered this fascinating find, the exact details remain shrouded in mystery. Located in Ogden, Utah, this wild-and-crazy van is currently up for grabs on eBay, with bidding reaching an enticing $3,350 from interested parties.

Our very own Jeff Lavery previously reviewed this remarkable piece in October 2021 on Barn Finds. Comparing the available photographs and description from then to now, it appears that the vehicle may have changed hands or failed to find a buyer the first time around. During the previous listing, the bidding soared to $6,800, which is twice the current rate (so far). While it ran and drove during the previous listing and continues to do so today, it’s worth noting that there are reported wiring issues that need to be addressed.

The origins and evolution of a van like this spark curiosity. How did it find its way to the U.S. from England when Ford already had a similar domestic product? It seems that someone seized the opportunity to customize it during the “shaggin'” craze, a trend that has since passed. Instead of settling for a modest 4 or 6-cylinder engine with a 3-on-the-tree transmission, the customizers went all out by fitting it with a powerful big-block V8 and automatic transmission, adding an unexpected twist to this van’s story.

While the article does not mention whether the rust issues identified two years ago have been resolved, or if the suggestion to install wheelie bars to handle the increased torque of the larger motor has been implemented, it’s likely that the van remains unchanged from its 2021 appearance. The transaction between the seller and buyer may occur without a title, as the seller mentions having a VIN inspection but not completing the process of legalization. For a deeper dive into the captivating details of this artifact, we encourage you to review Jeff’s insightful notes. Unearth the mysteries of this Scooby-Doo inspired treasure!
