Born from the collaboration between mechanical engineer Bob Nordskog and George Barris, the “Asteroid” began its journey as a brand-new, unpainted 1963 Chevy Corvette. With Barris Kustoms as the workshop, the stage was set for an unprecedented project. Undeterred by the absence of previous fabricators experienced in such ambitious endeavors, Barris fearlessly embarked on the transformation. With just 10 miles on the odometer, the Corvette underwent a metamorphosis that would redefine automotive boundaries.
Barris’s creative genius breathed life into the “Asteroid” with a custom body design that pushed the limits of imagination. From a modified and extended nose cone with hidden headlights behind a striking custom grille, to unique headers that exited behind the front wheels, every detail exuded boldness. The original split rear window was replaced, and the wheel arches were expanded to accommodate larger wheels. Adorned in a captivating solid copper color, the “Asteroid” demanded attention and earned its celestial name.
Not content with sheer visual splendor alone, the “Asteroid” boasted exceptional versatility. Equipped with Dayton wire wheels for open-road cruising and American Mags with race tires for the track, this extraordinary creation seamlessly transitioned between worlds. Inside, the interior, designed by Don Ferrara, featured pearl white seats, a padded dash panel, and custom accents complementing the copper exterior. Powered by a formidable 352 cubic-inch engine, the “Asteroid” delivered impressive performance on the quarter-mile, setting new standards for a 1963 Corvette.
