Prepare to witness a dramatic race against time as a rare gem, the 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS, is discovered in a state of despair. Initially introduced as a performance car, the Impala SS shifted its focus to style in 1962, resulting in over 99,000 deliveries within a year. However, this particular ’62 SS has endured years of neglect, exposed to the unforgiving elements. Now residing in Mount Vernon, Illinois, this Super Sport is in desperate need of restoration and can be yours for an enticing $3,200. Special thanks to barn finder Gunter Kramer for unearthing this incredible find.
In 1962, the Super Sport variant of the Impala distinguished itself through subtle trim differences. Adorned with Super Sport badging, front bucket seats, and special wheel covers, these cars exuded a distinct allure. While the option of a six-cylinder engine was available, most enthusiasts opted for the V8 powerplants, ranging from the iconic 283 small-block to the legendary 409. Although we cannot confirm if the seller’s car retains its original numbers-matching engine, it does feature remnants of a 283 engine paired with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission.
The seller provides two sets of photos, showcasing the car’s heartbreaking journey from being abandoned in the woods to its current resting place on a trailer. These images represent a before-and-after tale, showcasing the Impala SS’s longing for its glory days. The original paint scheme, identified as code 973, once boasted a striking white-over-red combination. However, no traces of the white roof remain, suggesting a possible complete repaint in red at some point.
The reasons behind this car’s abandonment remain a mystery, often attributed to a fatal mechanical issue. Despite its odometer reading 44,000 miles, the car’s deteriorated condition implies that it may have turned over once before. Extensive damage can be seen in the floor and trunk pans, as well as throughout the sheet metal and undercarriage, with visible holes in several areas. While salvaging parts from this vehicle may prove challenging, the more ambitious plan involves embarking on a lengthy and costly restoration journey. The clock is ticking, and the fate of this 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS rests in the hands of a passionate restorer willing to breathe new life into this forgotten treasure.
