The Akhal-Teke is a rare breed of horses. They are very easy to identify because of their different characteristics. But what makes them easy to spot, is their shiny coats. Even in pictures, you can say that they are different from the horses that we normally see. Their shining blonde coats make them look more majestic.
Their shiny coats are a result of how the proteins in their hair are arranged. And this causes the light to reflect. And when it happens, this is when their coat looks like metal.
In China, the Akhal-Teke is called the ‘horses from heaven.’ There are only around 6,000 of these horses all around the world. Most of them can be found in Russia, but there is also a number of Akhal-Teke are in Europe in Europe and North America.
There are different theories regarding the origin of these Golden Horses. Some of them are believed to date back thousands of years. Some of them believe that that the Akhal-Teke are descendants of an older breed called the Turkoman Horses. In fact, others claim that they are of the same breed.
But according to the history of Turkmenistan, these people did selective breeding on the horses. They are used back in the day as rides during their fight against the Russian Empire. Turkoman people also influenced other horse breeds like modern warmbloods. It can also be possible that the Akhal-Teke horses today are from the line of Thoroughbreds.
The Akhal-Teke has a straight or slightly convex profile with refined heads. Unlike other horses, they have long ears and their eyes have an almond shape. Their backs are also lightly muscled that supports their long and upright necks. They have sloping shoulders and very thin skin.
But do not think that these horses are only for show. They are beautiful, but they are also tough and resilient. They even survived the Turkmenistan lands where there is not much food and water to survive.
